Got Cupcakes?

Capital Cupcake Camp

On March 29th, 2009 Canada’s capital will have their very first CupcakeCamp!

What is CupcakeCamp you ask?

CupcakeCamp is an opportunity for our community to come together and share their enthusiasm for cupcakes with all proceeds going to Ottawa’s Women Alive/Femme Active Program! Everyone who brings cupcakes will have the opportunity to brag about their creations which will be presented to the Tasters for a cupcake tasting frenzy!

You can get involved!

Capital CupcakeCamp is looking for volunteers to help with:

  • Setup
  • Baker Registration (all those cupcakes have to come from somewhere)
  • Taster Registration (all those cupcakes have to go somewhere)
  • Greeting and Hosting (making sure our guests are comfortable)
Cupcake Showcasing (making sure our cupcakes are comfortable)
  • Take down
  • and probably a few other things, too.

Come out, have fun, and help make our first event an overwhelming success!

Vote for my Cupcakes!!

I have entered my peach, cinnamon, and mascarpone cupcakes into a contest!  I would love to win all of their lovely prizes so if you would take a minute to head to this site and vote for my cupcake “Let Them Eat Cake I would very much appreciate it.

These cupcakes are cinnamon cupcakes with fresh, cinnamon dusted peach slices placed gently in the batter before baking.  They are topped off with a silky mascarpone buttercream icing.

I hope you’ll vote for me!!

UPDATE:  Well, I didn’t win the contest but I did alright for my first online baking competition. 🙂  I came in 28th out of 58 entries so I’m happy. 🙂  Thanks to those who voted!

Wilton Roses & Fresh Squeezed Lemons

I just finished the first Wilton cake decorating course at the local Michael’s craft store.  I must say that I enjoyed it and learned quite a bit.  I know my husband and coworkers were more than happy to enjoy the fruits of my labour.  I made 3 cakes over the last 3 weeks including a simple vanilla cake with fresh strawberries for the first week and a rich chocolate cinnamon cake for the second week.  My final course was last night and I decided fresh squeezed lemons for my cake and creamy yellow roses were the way to go…

The Cordon Bleu…

If anyone is feeling very generous I would LOVE to take the Patisserie Diploma at the Cordon Bleu.

I would only need $21,100 for the program as well as enough money to live off of while I take the course.  Just think of all the wonderful desserts you would be getting as a reward for your kindness!!

Drool over these tasty treats and imagine all the incredible things I could do with some training!!

mmmmmmini cupcakes!

Today I purchased 2 mini cupcake pans and some adorable striped baking cups!

I’m hoping to have a mini cupcake baking session this week in anticipation of a visit from my first cupcake customer.  Her wedding is in October and she’ll be coming by to taste test chocolate and vanilla cupcakes (aren’t you jealous?).  Hopefully these will be more than satisfactory!

* Photos not to scale… obviously. 😀

** Both products by Wilton.

Mmmmm… cake.

I am on the hunt for the perfect vanilla cake!

I made one this week and both the texture and the flavour were quite good. I did however find that the layers had no height to them and although the cake is rich and I don’t need a large slice I found the appearance was not what I would want it to be. I think a cake should be magestic and for that I need a bit more height.

I used a cream cheese icing which was good but was almost too rich and the recipe came out runnier than I would have liked and I had no extra ingredients to thicken it up with.

My biggest problem this time around was transport. I had iced the cake on a plate and had intended to wrap it in plastic wrap and bring it to work. Unfortunately we were completely out and the largest container I had was too small for the plate. Have you ever tried to move a completely decorated cake with a spatula? Messy. So although the cake was yummy it wasn’t the prettiest thing in town. No complaints were heard from my coworkers… of course their mouths were full! I will definitely be purchasing some of those cake boards for future cake experimentation.

Do any of you have a wonderful vanilla cake recipe you would like to share? I always bake from scratch with very basic of ingredients and I prefer to avoid recipes with oil or shortening. Feel free to add your recipe suggestions/links to my comments!

Citrus Cupcakes

Citrus-y goodness….

This is my latest creation for an office bake sale… lemon-orange cupcakes and lemon-orange buttercream icing.

UPDATE: The cupcakes didn’t sell as well as I had expected.  I found out why… apparently they look too pretty, as if bought at the grocery store!  So people were sticking with the home made goodies instead!  When told they really were homemade people responded that I should go into business for myself!  At least now I know who I’ll try selling them to first!
