The Acorn is not a band. The word “band” doesn’t do them justice. The Acorn is a collective of incredibly talented musicians.
Their music is full to the brim with melodic harmonies as well as percussive and flowing rhythms. Their music accomplishes something impressive… it both soothes and energizes. It has an organic feel, as though it is pushing its way up through the moist dark earth at the height of spring hoping to join the crocuses while they ring in the season of renewal.
I hope that doesn’t sound like a pretentious pile of crap. I wrote those words while listening to the song Crooked Legs off of their most recent album Glory Hope Mountain. There is definitely something about The Acorn, something fresh and alive in their sound and in their presence.
If you didn’t have the chance to see them in their element at The Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec this past weekend be sure to hunt them down in your hometown. I’m sure they’ll pop up sooner or later… it is spring after all!
You can check out some reviews here or here.
I went for my very first run tonight! I decided I wanted to try something different and the opportunity presented itself in the form of the Learn to Run clinic at a store called The Running Room.
The clinic is for beginners or people trying to get back into running after injuries or other things. For the first night we started out slowly with a warm up that consisted of a brisk walk to our destination and a walk:run ratio of 2:1 minutes; walk 2 minutes and run 1 minute. We are supposed to run on at least 2 other occasions during the week and on next Friday night we will be running 1 minute and walking 1 minute. The goal is to reach 5 km (3.1 miles) by the end of May.
I’m in desperate need of properly fitted running shoes so I think I will spend some time this weekend hunting down some good shoes.
Wish me luck with this running thing… I’m going to need it!
I’m so excited! According to Colin Greenwood Radiohead will be releasing more details about the second half of their tour in North America this coming Monday! <insert happy dance here!>
Here is a taste of a live performance to get you in the mood…
Apparently Thom Yorke has been listening to an electronic band called Autechre. Head over to their MySpace page and have a listen.
Pitchfork (my fabulous source!) had a chat with Colin Greenwood which you can check out here.
Early in the week I participated in a blog contest and I won second place!! I love contests, I love blogs, and I love supporting members of the Etsy community! This contest had it all!
To enter I had to write a tiny little story to describe a painting created by HeatherFuture. The painting is beautiful!
Here is the little description I wrote:
Eloise watched as the sun sank below the horizon causing the sky to explode in a fiery orange display.
Russet, her feathered companion wished she would sit down and stop pressing her heels into his bladder.
I was very excited when she contacted me about winning second place and I can’t wait to get my prize of 4 of her lovely pins! I will definitely be posting a photo when I get them!
Check out the rest of HeatherFuture’s art on Etsy!! She has beautiful paintings, I particularly love Pauline the owl!
I’ve decided to branch out and create a new blog dedicated to my jewelry designs!
The Blue Sky Design Blog will feature my own creations and eventually will include features on other artisans from here to there and back again! I will also be posting other items related to my jewelry on that blog including craft shows I plan to attend and contests or sales for my shop on Etsy.
I truly believe in supporting artisans locally and internationally. These people work hard at their crafts and deserve recognition for it. I hope I can accomplish that with my new blogging efforts.
Although I love my WordPress blog there are some policies here that limit my ability to promote my work so the new blog will be hosted on Blogger. I will continue to post here on Ranting & Raving since it has become a great place to spread rumours and generally blather on about stuff I like.
Please continue to visit and comment here and at my new blog. I always love to hear what you’re thinking!
For those of us who are anxiously (and impatiently) waiting for word on an August concert date here is a little tidbit to tide you over.
Rumour has it that a UK band called Underworld will be opening for the August portion of the Radiohead tour.
Founded by Rick Smith & Karl Hyde, Underworld has been compared to the likes of Orbital and the Chemical Brothers. Underworld has been around since the 80’s and currently includes Darren Price. In October 2007 they released an album called “Oblivion with Bells”. You can check out the first single, Crocodile, on their MySpace page.

It has been just under 3 weeks (although I swear it has felt much longer!) and my Moo cards have finally arrived!
Each card is printed in a matte finish with a cropped photo of the blue sky and fluffy white clouds! The images are all from various pictures I have taken. The text on the back is in blue in keeping with the whole “blue sky” theme. The cards are 28 x 70 mm so they are nice and small.
They will be perfect to add into the box for each piece of jewelry that I ship out! I’ve got 100 of them so if you’re a friend of mine you are definitely getting one… or a few if you promise to hand them out to potential customers! <wink wink nudge nudge!>
